The latest data released by the U.S. Census Bureau (US Census Bureau) shows that New York State’s population dropped by 126,355 people in July this year compared to the same period last year, a decline of 0.65 percent, which is located in the top of the country’s states, and the state is likely to lose at least one congressional seat in the House of Representatives in this case.
The Census Bureau’s analysis is based on 2010 census figures, and 2020 census data will not be available until next year.
The data show that between July of last year and July of this year, the number of people in New York State fell by 0.65 percent, and although New York’s population has been on a downward trend since 2016, this is the largest population decline in a one-year period.
William Frey, chief demographer at the Brookings Institution, noted that if the number stays the same, New York State will definitely lose a congressional House seat, which currently has 27 seats; if only 26 seats are available, the number of New York congressional seats will be less than Florida’s for the first time.
According to Census Bureau data, Florida’s population increased by 241,256 people in July this year compared to July last year, an increase of 1.12%, second only to Texas, Texas increased by 373,965 people, an increase of 1.29%; and 21% of the 1.4 million people who left New York in the past decade moved to Florida.
The state that saw a decline in population after New York was Illinois, down 0.63 percent, followed by Hawaii and West Virginia, down 0.61 percent and 0.58 percent, respectively.
The Northeastern region of the United States experienced the most significant population loss over the past year, with New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont all showing some degree of population decline.
The overall U.S. population grew at its lowest rate in 120 years, which experts attribute to a drop in birth rates and immigration due to the new crown epidemic and, more importantly, to the epidemic that has claimed more than 322,000 American lives since March.
E.J. McMahon, founder of the Empire Center, a conservative think tank in Albany, said that in the past, New York’s population growth could not leave new immigrants and newborns, but since 2017, the number of immigrants in New York has plummeted, and compared to 2010, the population of New York is predicted to have a 0.21 percent decline in 2020.
