Three lawmakers from the Bundestag’s human rights committee have written to German Foreign Minister Thomas Maas as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrives in Germany on a European tour, saying China has lost its “qualification to be a trustworthy partner.”
In the letter, the parliamentarians warned that the foreign ministers’ meeting “should only be used to exchange views on bilateral and international relations” and should not be used by The Chinese authorities for “domestic or international propaganda”, Deutsche Welle reported On August 29.
The letter also called on the German Federal government to use the meeting as an opportunity to “unequivocally demand the closure of the camps where the Xinjiang Uighurs were brutally detained”. The three lawmakers also raised the Hong Kong issue, saying That Beijing’s actions had “grossly violated the norms of international law.” The letter said that Even in the face of Germany and Europe, China has shown “an undisguised claim to power.” On the Internet and elsewhere, China is “vigorously promoting the denigration of the democratic system and trying to spread totalitarian narratives in Europe through distortions, misrepresentations, money and inducements.” The three lawmakers stressed that the German federal government, which holds the ROTATING EU presidency, now had a duty to “make a clear statement.”
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is currently on a visit to Europe. Some analysts believe That Beijing is trying to draw Europe in to prevent a common front with the US to contain China amid the growing rivalry between Beijing and the US.
