Taiwan’s former Minister of Culture and scholar living in Germany, Long Yingtai, recently said on Facebook, “No matter what you say, I am against the war,” causing a storm of public opinion on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
According to Deutsche Welle, some scholars in Taiwan believe it is hypocritical to say such things when Taiwan is resisting the threat of Chinese troops. There are also Taiwanese netizens who say that this is an attempt to get Taiwan to make peace with the Chinese Communist Party.
However, some Taiwanese netizens say that Long Yingtai’s remarks can be applied to China as well, and there is no need to take a seat.
At the same time, netizens in mainland China have also been discussing the issue. Some say that with the critical situation in the Taiwan Strait and the radicalization of public opinion on the island, Long Yingtai’s attitude is seen as negative and a sign of disloyal surrender.
Others imply that Long Yingtai’s face is that of a porcelain trap, and that Taiwan will retreat once the mainland uses military means.
Outside the court of public opinion, the situation in the Taiwan Strait is becoming increasingly tense. The Chinese military conducted a series of live-fire drills in the Fujian waters from October 13 to 17. A week ago, Chinese official media CCTV also released a video of Chinese troops landing in Fujian and Guangdong.
U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien recently said that Taiwan should start thinking about strategies to deter the Chinese Communist Party’s military advance from land.
