Palestinian-Israeli armed conflict in Gaza escalates with all-out war on the horizon

The violent conflict between Palestinians and Israelis continued to escalate on May 12. Over the past few days, Hamas rocket attacks and continued Israeli air strikes have killed 56 people in the Gaza Strip and six in Israel. The United Nations has warned both sides to exercise restraint and avoid a full-scale war.

The Israeli bombing campaign in Gaza has now killed at least 56 people, including 14 children, and injured more than 300 others, according to the Gaza-based Palestinian health ministry. Israel says at least 15 Hamas militants have been killed.

The U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, “Vinnyslan,” called on both sides to immediately stop the violence. He warned that the armed conflict in the Gaza Strip is turning into a full-scale war and that the sacrifices are being made by civilians. While U.S. President Joe Biden is planning to shift his strategic focus from the Middle East to address threats from Communist China, Russia and cyberspace, the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has forced the United States to return to the Middle East to address the escalating political crisis there.
