An Orthodox priest wounded in Lyon, France, church shooting

A Greek Orthodox priest was wounded in a shooting at an Orthodox church in Lyon, France, Saturday afternoon, and the suspect, a man, fled the scene. Police said they arrested a suspect.

The priest was shot twice and critically wounded around 4 p.m. Saturday as the church was about to close, AFP reported. Lyon prosecutor Yagai said there were no clues yet, and the suspect’s motive was unknown. The Nice church attack just two days ago, in which a man who shouted for God’s greatness killed three people, one of whom was beheaded, and two weeks ago a history teacher was beheaded by an 18-year-old in a Paris suburb.

A suspect fitting the description of witnesses has been arrested, police said. The wounded Greek Orthodox priest, 52-year-old Father Kakavirakis, was in critical condition when he was shot twice by the attacker as he closed the door on his church.

The Greek Church has condemned the attack.

In the wake of the Nice church attack, France has increased security for churches and public facilities across the country. The interior minister warned that France could still face attacks from Islamic radicals, and authorities have deployed an additional 7,000 soldiers to protect places of worship and schools.
