British Prime Minister Orders National Closure for One Month

British Prime Minister orders nationwide lockdown as new cases of coronavirus infections in the U.K. top one million at the same time.

Reuters says British Prime Minister Johnson announced at an impromptu press conference on Saturday that the United Kingdom has imposed a month-long nationwide lockdown starting at midnight on Thursday and scheduled to end on Dec. 2. During this period, people will be allowed to leave their homes only for classes, work, exercise, critical purchases and medical appointments; key stores, schools and universities will remain open; bars and restaurants will be closed; major sporting events will take place, but business sports for adults and children will be required to stop; and international travel outside of work will be curtailed.

Prime Minister Johnson said the government will rework the payroll subsidy program for the new coronavirus outbreak to ensure that workers who were temporarily laid off during the month receive 80 percent of their salaries.

Prime Minister Johnson said, “We have to act now,” and that “unless we act, we could see thousands of people die every day in this country.

Reuters said that more than 20,000 new cases of new coronavirus infections are occurring every day in the United Kingdom. Scientists warn that the neo-crown epidemic is moving in the wrong direction and that measures are needed to control the spread of the virus. Scientists say that in a worst-case scenario, the death toll could exceed 80,000.

Previously, France and Germany had announced nationwide closures.
