Sean Connery, First James Bond Actor, Dies at 90

Sir Sean Connery, the famous Scottish actor, died on October 31 at the age of 90, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). He was best known for his role as British MI6 agent James Bond, the first person to bring the character to the big screen, and starred in seven spy thrillers. His career spanned several decades and his numerous awards include an Academy Award, two Bafta Awards, and three Golden Globes.

Sean Connery, born August 25, 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, is a British actor and producer who rose to fame in 1962 for his role as James Bond in the first “James Bond” film, “Dr. No”, and received attention from Hollywood. Connery’s other films include “The Hunt for Red October,” “Indiana Jones – The Last Crusade” and “The Island”.

He has long been considered the best actor to play James Bond, and is regularly voted best actor in fan polls. He won an Academy Award in 1988 for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an Irish policeman in “Out of Reach”.

On November 11, 2005, Connery received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute, and in January 2008, he announced his retirement from the film industry. In August of this year, Connery celebrated his 90th birthday. He was recently joined by British actress Margaret Nolan, who played the Bond girl in the third installment of the James Bond franchise, 007: Goldfinger.

Reacting to the news of Connery’s death, brother and sister James Bond filmmakers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli tweeted, “We are saddened by the news of Sir Sean Connery’s passing. He will always be remembered as the original James Bond. His indelible filmography began when he uttered those unforgettable words. ‘My name is Bond…’ “James Bond’ – his rugged yet witty portrayal of a sexy and charismatic secret agent who revolutionized the world. He was undoubtedly a major contributor to the success of the series, and we will be forever grateful to him.”

The current Bond actor, British actor Daniel Craig, also released a statement saying, “I was saddened to hear of the passing of a true master of cinema. Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond, and much more. He defined an era and a style. The intelligence and charisma he shaped on screen can be measured in millions of watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. He will continue to influence actors and filmmakers for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Wherever he is, I hope there’s a golf course there.”
