Biden’s immigration policy is wildly criticized on both sides

President Biden’s first day in office was to promote his new policy on illegal immigration, but whether he overturned the former Trump policy or his own policy, every move has been scrutinized and criticized by both the left and the right, resulting in a situation that is not pleasing to both sides.

Biden took swift action at the beginning of his term to repeal Trump’s travel ban and stop the construction of the border fence, but triggered a strong backlash from the Republican Party; and hesitated on whether to raise the refugee limit, which also frustrated many on the left.

Now Biden wants bipartisan congressional support for his immigration reform policies to change the hard-line enforcement system of the Trump era, but faces many practical and political challenges.

Boundless Immigration, a group of immigration lawyers and experts specializing in helping illegal immigrants, criticized Biden’s 100-day New Deal immigration policy as more retreat than progress.

Another organization, the National Immigrant Justice Center, also pointed out that the policy director Altman (Heidi Altman), compared with six months ago, there is not much difference.

While Biden has signed a series of executive orders rescinding Trump’s immigration policies, he has yet to determine how to replace them; the slow pace of reform has sometimes made advocacy groups suspicious of Biden’s delays.

Rights groups are most unhappy with the administration’s slow issuance of temporary worker visas, the continued maintenance of the Trump-era maximum cap of 15,000 refugee admissions, and the continued retention and use of Trump’s law allowing deportation of illegal immigrants at the southern border.

They criticized the Biden administration for still avoiding giving hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants the right to live and work in the United States, which is no different from the Trump administration.

On the conservative and Republican side, however, immigration has been an option for attacking Biden, especially the influx of illegal immigrants, the chaos, the mismanagement of resources, and even the threat to national security. The Federation for American Immigration Reform, an organization that advocates for reduced immigration, has accused Biden of systematically and quickly removing everything from the Trump administration, leading to a border crisis that is visible to everyone.

Advocacy groups hope Biden will take full advantage of the current Democratic control of the House and Senate to focus immigration reform on creating irreversible rules.

The next 100 days will be crucial in testing whether Biden will use his political capital and all of the administration’s tools to deliver on his campaign promises on immigration.
