A McDonald’s in Tampa Bay, Florida, is short of people, and in order to recruit employees, it has offered a bonus system that gives $50 cash for attending interviews, but it still hasn’t attracted many applicants, because the state’s unemployment benefits are too generous!
According to Business Insider, Blake Casper, the owner of the McDonald’s, said he, the general manager and a supervisor came up with the idea and thought it would be effective in boosting the number of people coming to interviews. “If this doesn’t work, I’m willing to pay $50 to be interviewed”.
The newspaper mentioned that Casper, who owns 60 McDonald’s in the Tampa Bay area, said, “The biggest challenge right now is the unemployment benefit system developed by the federal and state governments, which has really created the motivation for people not to work now” and “How can you blame them? Because unemployment instead you can get more money, so our base salary must be higher than that”, and he is currently considering raising the starting salary from $12 to $13.
However, some experts say that the shortage of such service workers without special skills is due to the fear of catching the Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) epidemic and the perceived lack of job protection and adequate benefits, which are affecting people’s willingness to be recruited.
According to the website, the minimum weekly unemployment benefit available in Florida is $32 and the maximum is $275, depending on Florida’s current unemployment rate.
