Geng Xiaonan’s books increase to 200,000 Public Security steps up investigation

Beijing’s cultural celebrity Geng Xiaonan and her husband were detained by Beijing police.

Geng Xiaonan, a Beijing-based cultural activist who publicly supported former Tsinghua University professor Xu Zhangrun, was detained on September 9 on suspicion of “illegal business operation,” and was arrested a month later. Geng’s defense attorney, Shang Baojun, has recently made several unsuccessful attempts to meet with his client. The number of books involved in Geng’s case has increased from 8,000 to 200,000. In addition, Xu Zhangrun was warned for speaking out on behalf of Geng Xiaonan.

Geng Xiaonan, a member of Beijing’s cultural and publishing community, was arrested in mid-October by the Haidian District Procuratorate on suspicion of “illegal business operation. Defense attorney Shang Baojun has repeatedly applied to meet with Geng Xiaonan since October 29, but to no avail. Geng’s friend, Tsinghua University professor Guo Yuhua, told Radio Free Asia on Friday, “She was formally arrested by the prosecutor’s office on October 14, the same day that her lawyer met with her,” he said. On the last two occasions, the lawyers have asked to meet with her, but they have not seen their clients. Police say Geng Xiaonan has been printing, selling and publishing books for the past ten years without legal procedures and is suspected of breaking the law. The books included books on cooking, nutrition and health. It is believed that the authorities’ arrest of Geng Xiaonan is related to her active participation in public activities in recent years. For example, when former Tsinghua University professor Xu Zhangrun was taken away by police on July 6, Geng Xiaonan was the first to post a message on overseas social media platforms, speaking out for Xu Zhangrun. Cai Xia, a former professor at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, tweeted that over the years, Geng Xiaonan had also helped dissidents, including Bao Tong and Yao Jifu.

Speaking out for Geng Xiaonan, Xu Zhangrun was warned four times.

Xu Zhangrun, a former professor at Tsinghua University, has recently sent an open letter demanding the release of Geng Xiaonan, which was signed by more than 300 people from all walks of life at home and abroad, including the United States, Japan, France, and Canada. Since his arrest, Xu Zhangrun has been reprimanded by police four times, most recently two weeks ago when authorities asked him to stop speaking out on behalf of Geng Xiaonan.

Guo Yuhua told the station that Xu can’t leave Beijing and his movements are restricted: “He can’t leave Beijing, he can’t leave the country, he can’t give interviews to foreign media, and he can’t accept donations.”
