In Africa, South Africa has the worst outbreak.
Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) data show that the cumulative number of confirmed cases of 2019 coronavirus disease in Africa exceeded 3 million cases on Jan. 11, of which more than 72,000 people died of the disease.
The Associated Press reported that the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in South Africa exceeded 1.2 million, accounting for about 40% of all Africa, and 32,824 people died of the disease nationwide.
The high number of confirmed cases reported in South Africa may be due to the fact that more screening was done compared to other African countries.
South Africa is currently fighting a resurgent outbreak, which is caused by a mutated strain of the 2019 coronavirus disease, which is more infectious and spreads more quickly. Public health experts say that many local hospitals are nearing critical capacity, but the number of infections is expected to continue to rise.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet with his cabinet this week to gauge whether further restrictions should be taken against the disease, while also balancing the need to promote economic growth.
