Many Tibetans were so pleased to see the new photo of the abducted 11th Panchen Lama Gendun Chogyi Nyima that they quickly framed it and enshrined it in their altars and monasteries.
A Lhasa-based scholar and journalist, using the pseudonym “Ugyen Gyalpo,” contributed a book to Chilling.com, which focuses on religious freedom in China, about the activities of the Chinese Communist-supported “Han Panchen” in Tibet, how Tibetans were forced to listen to the “Han Panchen” at gunpoint, and how the people remain sincere about the missing Panchen, Gendun Chogyi Nyima.
The article mentions that the “Han Panchen” also attended and performed Buddhist activities and sutra recitations at the traditional monastery of the real Panchen Lama, Zashilunpo Monastery, where hundreds of monks were forced to welcome him, all under the watchful eye of Chinese public security and the ever-present surveillance cameras around.
During his visit to Tibet, “Han Panchen” also visited the Sakya monastery, the leading monastery of one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, saying that “Tibetan Buddhism, as part of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation, should be Chineseized and socialistly transformed.
The article also said that last year a face expert from Britain made a photo of the abducted 11th Panchen Lama Gendun Chogyi Nyima, and many Tibetans were so happy to see the new photo that they quickly framed it and enshrined it in their altars and monasteries.
The 10th Panchen Lama passed away in 1989, and in 1995, the 14th Dalai Lama recognized Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama at the age of six. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was then abducted by the Chinese Communist government and has not been seen since, but both the Chinese Communist Party and the Dalai Lama say he is still alive. The CCP then recognized 5-year-old Genghis Jebub (commonly known as Gyaincain Norbu) as the reincarnated spiritual child of the Panchen Lama. He was groomed to become the 11th Panchen Lama with the support of the CCP and is an official mouthpiece of the Chinese Buddhist community that is loyal to the CCP.
