The official website of the National People’s Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) released news on the 29th that Song Xue, a former deputy to the 13th National People’s Congress elected by the PLA and former deputy chief of staff of the navy, has left his post due to suspected serious disciplinary violations. Song Xue, who was the deputy chief of the J-15 carrier aircraft takeoff and landing test mission, is a top PLA officer suspected of serious violations in recent years.
The National People’s Congress of the Communist Party of China took the initiative to announce that on April 8, the Navy held a military congress and decided to remove Song Xue from his position as a deputy to the National People’s Congress. In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Law of the National People’s Congress of the Communist Party of China and local people’s congresses at all levels, Song Xue’s qualification as a deputy was terminated.
Beijing Youth Daily’s WeChat public website “Politics” reported on the 30th that the news disclosed two levels of meaning: first, Song Xue is no longer the deputy chief of staff of the Navy, and second, Song Xue is suspected of serious disciplinary violations.
Song Xue, 63, was promoted to rear admiral in July 2010; before becoming deputy chief of naval staff, he served as vice minister of the Navy’s equipment department. Song Xue has made several public appearances to explain to the public the construction and development of the Communist Party’s aircraft carriers.
According to the report, Xinhua published an article “Details of J-15 Landing on Liaoning Aircraft Carrier” in 2012, in which Song Xue was interviewed as the “deputy chief commander of the J-15 carrier aircraft takeoff and landing test mission”. In 2013, Song also introduced the situation of China’s aircraft carrier construction. At that time, he revealed that the aircraft carrier project involved thousands of professional and technical categories in many systems such as ships, aviation and electronics, and thousands of Chinese enterprises were involved in the construction of the first aircraft carrier.
Song Xue had also mentioned that China’s first aircraft carrier Liaoning is currently not assigned to the Navy’s three fleets and is directly commanded and managed by the Navy. He also revealed for the first time in an interview that China will have more than one aircraft carrier and hopes that the next one will be built bigger because it can carry more aircraft and will be more powerful in combat.
According to the report, Song Xue is the first top naval general to fall in more than six years. The report points out that the 13th National People’s Congress (NPC) has previously lost five military personnel because of “serious violations of discipline”, but Song Xue is the first senior PLA officer who is also suspected of serious violations of the law, and it is unclear what details he is suspected of breaking. As the naval confrontation between the United States and China has become increasingly tense, the Chinese Communist Party has suddenly purged the navy at this time, which is a cause for concern.
