More than 100,000 people flocked to Tiananmen Square as a variant of the virus hit China

China’s May Day holiday kicked off with a bang. According to mainland media reports, at least 100,000 people flocked to Beijing’s Tiananmen Square alone early on May 1. However, the May Day holiday is a sensitive time for the spread of India’s mutated strain in China, and concerns have been raised about whether the May Day holiday will set off another outbreak in China.

According to mainland media reports, adults and children trapped in the city during the May Day holiday have also been “fleeing” to enjoy a few days of leisure.

According to the latest forecast by the mainland Ministry of Transport, passenger traffic in China will reach 265 million, which means one out of every 17 people will travel on May Day, according to China’s population of 1.4 billion. The figure for 2019 is 160 million, up 65.625% year-on-year.

The Chinese Communist Party Railway Nanchang Bureau Group Co., Ltd. disclosed that 1.041 million passengers were sent on April 30, with 542,000 and 499,000 passengers sent from Jiangxi and Fujian provinces respectively, an increase of 18% and 3.93% respectively compared to the same period in 2019. 1.441 million passengers were sent on May 1, an increase of 19.9% compared to the same period in 2019.

In Beijing, a large number of visitors had already arrived at Tiananmen Square before dawn on the morning of May 1. Large numbers of security personnel were present to divert and conduct security checks. An interview with a tour guide estimated that at least 100,000 people flocked to Tiananmen Square, more than in previous years, describing it as an “outbreak” after the epidemic.

Some tourists pointed out that this morning Tiananmen Square is very crowded, regretting today’s outbound travel, but also advised others, the future of Beijing Tiananmen Square, it is best not to choose the “May Day”, so as not to affect their own interest in travel.

Some restaurants in the tourist area are expected to have a very strong flow of people and consumption, business is three times more than on weekdays, and have arranged for more staff to cope with the “May Day” holiday crowds.

The mainland media said that the total box office of Chinese movies during the “May Day” period, together with pre-sale figures, also exceeded 200 million yuan.

On April 29, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the CDC, warned at a press conference with the Communist Party’s State Council that a mutated strain of the disease had been detected in India in some Chinese cities.

Wu said that virus mutations have actually been occurring since the epidemic began, and that the virus is mutating as long as the epidemic continues, so it is crucial to implement preventive measures to both end the epidemic of mutated strains and prevent new mutations from occurring.

He also warned that the May Day holiday is approaching and that the epidemic prevention work may face new difficulties, and that “the implementation of preventive and control measures is the most critical” at this time. However, he did not say which Chinese cities had seen the mutated Indian strain.

On the same day, Chinese officials announced 20 new confirmed cases of the CCP virus (Neoconiosis) across China on April 28. The Zhejiang Health Commission announced 10 cases from the Hong Kong cargo ship “Hua Yang Chaoyang”, which had been berthed in India. On the same day, Chongqing announced a case with a history of working in India, but did not specify the type of virus variant the person had contracted.

On April 27, Yang Zhanqiu, a professor at Wuhan University’s Institute of Virology, warned that if the Indian outbreak persists, it could spread to China, but denied that “an outbreak like the one in India” could occur in China.

Currently, the epidemic in India is rapidly worsening. As of April 29, India has a cumulative total of 18.38 million confirmed cases of the CCP virus, with 204,832 deaths and nearly 380,000 new infections on the same day, continuing to set new global records.

Indian disease control experts estimate that the peak of the epidemic in the country may be in early May.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the Indian variant of the virus “B.1.617”, one of the causes of the out-of-control epidemic in India, has been found in at least 17 countries. This variant is more dangerous than the original virus, meaning it is more easily transmitted, more deadly or has the ability to evade vaccines.

The CCP virus broke out in Wuhan in December 2019, and before mid-January 2020, the CCP falsely claimed three times that the outbreak was preventable and controllable and would not be passed from person to person. This led to the outbreak getting completely out of control and spreading rapidly around the world. As of today, more than 140 million people worldwide are infected and more than 3.1 million have died.
