More than 1,000 new cases of the British variant of the virus in New York City in a week

According to the latest statistics, the number of cases of British Variant Virus (B.1.1.7) in New York City increased by more than 1,300 cases from the previous week, and the percentage of cases of British Variant Virus continues to rise among sequenced cases; in addition, the 11355 area of Flushing continues to have the second highest rate of infection in the city.

The New York City Department of Health released on April 29 that 3,667 people in New York City have reported the B.1.1.7 British variant of the virus as of April 27, up 1,330 from a week ago (as of April 20), when the figure was 2,337.

The proportion of UK variant virus cases among genetically sequenced cases also increased slightly. Sequencing of the genomes of a subset of virus specimens collected from New York City residents during the week of April 12-18 revealed 37.9% of cases of UK variant virus, a 1.3% increase from the previous week (April 5-11) (36.3%).

The Brazilian variant of the virus (P.1) also rose slightly, with a 3.4% share from April 12 to 18, compared with 2.6% the previous week.

The New York City Department of Health said the Brazilian variant (P.1) is not only more transmissible, but can also break through the effectiveness of the vaccine, as two people who had previously been infected with the disease and later received two doses of the vaccine were infected with the Brazilian variant.

In addition, Flushing continues to have the highest rate of infection in the city, with the 11355 zip code area having the second highest 7-day average rate of infection in the city for the week of April 21-27, at 5.76%. In first place was the 11207 zip code Cypress Hills/East New York, Brooklyn (6.05%) area, and in third place was the 11220 zip code area of Sunset Park, a Chinese neighborhood in Brooklyn (5.71%).
