Chicago Mayor Lightfoot said when she visited Hawthorne Scholastic Academy in Lakeview on January 1 that she thought the campus would be closed for a few days or weeks at the beginning of the outbreak last year, but never expected it to be closed for nearly a year.
She said that when she drove to the elementary school, she saw some of the children walking and jumping with excitement on their way to school, and when she arrived at the school, she met a second grader who told her she “wanted to make new friends. We listen very carefully to parents,” Lightfoot said.
Lightfoot said CPS has invested $100 million to enhance the safety of the physical curriculum and has also provided up to 18,000 vaccinations for public school staff to administer.
One fourth-grader, Veer Zaveri, said he was tired of sitting at a computer desk in class every day and was happy to finally be back in school, even though he must now wear a mask.
According to a survey released by Chi Public Schools on the willingness of various ethnic groups to return to school, about 1/3 of Asian families are willing to let their children return to class, the same rate as African-American and Latino families, while up to 2/3 of white families want their children to return to physical classes.
