All the officers of CUHK student union resigned, saying they were threatened with death

Just elected to the Chinese University of Hong Kong Students’ Union officers cabinet “Sakuya” 26 launched a joint sign, opposed to the university to political override the rights of students.

All the officers of the Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong announced their resignation today on their first day in office, because members were threatened with death and had to withdraw their election manifesto and political platform, but the withdrawal also means that their public mandate has lapsed.

The newly-elected cabinet of the Chinese University Student Union (CUHK), “Sakuya”, originally took office today, but announced their collective resignation and apologized to nearly 4,000 voters, according to a report by Standpoint News and Hong Kong Apple Daily. President Lin Rui-Hei said that one of the reasons for the resignation was because of death threats.

He said the death threats, intimidation and threats, “we really can not not withdraw the above document (platform), we want to take this opportunity to apologize again to the voters and the public, is our cowardice, is that we do not have the ability to withstand these threats to the safety of the Family.”

Lin Ruixi said that today’s resignation decision is their withdrawal of the above document back political responsibility, “because once withdrawn our platform, yesterday’s public mandate has been completely invalid.”

He also said that the university had an informal meeting with student representatives on the evening of the 26th, during which the university representatives implied that if they continued to serve students in the name of CUHK, they would consider further disciplinary action against other student organizations in the same way, and consider disciplinary hearings for members of the “ShuoYi”, which could most seriously affect their degrees.

Vice President Luo Ziwei said that the student government election process is based on the principle of student autonomy and that he chose to resign after taking office in the hope of showing that “Sakuya” is an elected cabinet authorized by public opinion and that the university will not allow it to trample on public opinion by improperly DQ (disqualification).

The student organization “Sakuya” was elected to the student council last month as a group, and is scheduled to be in operation on March 1.

Before the student government took office, CUHK’s administration issued a statement on March 26, saying that the platform and statements made by the group earlier might violate national security laws and make false accusations against the university, as well as using the campus as a platform for political propaganda, which violated the university’s mission and tarnished its reputation.

CUHK also suspended the collection of student union dues for the student union; required the student union to register as an independent association or company and assume legal responsibility; suspended the student union officers from serving on different committees within the university; and suspended the university from providing administrative and university space support for the student union officers.

The statement also stressed that if students make inciting remarks, the university will take severe action, including temporary suspension or expulsion of the students concerned.

The next day, the “night” announced the withdrawal of all previously published political platform.

The “night” today did not say where the “death threats” came from, and whether the police had been called for help.

The first thing you need to do is to get a new one.
