More than 70% of Chinese worried about the side effects of the new crown vaccine, and nearly half questioned its ineffectiveness.

In order to understand the Chinese community’s thoughts and attitudes towards the vaccine, the Asian American health Association (AAHA) recently conducted a small-scale community survey through the social media WeChat. The results showed that as many as 73.4% of Chinese respondents were most concerned about the “side effects” of the vaccine, and nearly half of the respondents questioned the “ineffectiveness of the vaccine in preventing the New Coronavirus.

According to the report, a total of 286 Chinese participated in the survey between Nov. 14 and Dec. 5, of whom 55 percent were female and 45 percent were male, with 47 percent aged 40 to 60, 26 percent aged 60 or older, 22 percent aged 18 to 39, and 5 percent aged 17 or younger.

Respondents were able to make multiple choices about concerns and barriers to vaccination, and the results showed that the primary concern was about the potential risks and side effects of the vaccine, with 210 people choosing this option, followed by 130 people (45.5%) who were concerned about the cost of administration.

In addition, 23% of respondents were concerned about the language barrier affecting the administration, 7% were worried about the transportation to the injection site, 4.5% did not trust the vaccination, and 7% chose “other reasons”.

She also mentioned that at this stage, the city of Chicago still does not have a specific plan for when the vaccine will be administered to non-healthcare system and non-nursing home residents, and the association will keep in close contact with health units to update the vaccination process.

Liu Hong reminded that there is still a period of time before the new vaccine is universally administered. Before that, all people should still follow the principles of vaccination, keep a safe distance, wash hands regularly, wear a mask at all times, and do not neglect the necessity of vaccination measures just because the vaccine has been introduced.
