A student at Hunan University of Science and Technology has posted on Weibo that the whole class lit candles to read, saying it was a “rare occasion”.
The “overwhelming” cold spell is upon us, with nearly 80% of the average temperatures across China in the single digits, and some even in the double digits below zero. The provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong, which suddenly issued power restrictions, were the first to be hit by power outages. Some office workers complained that only computers could be turned on, while all others were banned from using electricity; some students shared their classroom situation, relying on candlelight reading at night to survive the winter wave, as if they were back in the past when there were no lights and no electricity.
The United News reported that the emergency power restriction in the freeze has aroused concern, some netizens in Hunan’s Yuelu District complained that the temperature was only 3 degrees and they had to go to work, and they could only “turn on the computer and turn off all other electricity”, so all the office buildings were without power, “you need to climb 2 or 30 floors to get to the office! I hope the wind will stop, otherwise how to climb to the office!
As the power limit is just above 3 degrees, the air conditioners in the building are not allowed to be turned on, so it is really a pain to go to work at this time. In Changsha, Hunan Province, people at work complained on Weibo that they were freezing in the office until they sneezed, but they didn’t dare to get up to turn on the air conditioner, and then a middle-aged teacher couldn’t help but close the window where the cold wind was pouring in, and the moment he twisted open the air conditioner, he was “really touched”, “although the damn air conditioner only went up to 19 degrees before it stopped (the government stipulates that no air conditioner can be turned on above 20 degrees).
Some enterprises, in the face of the power restriction order, choose to respond by taking a direct holiday or make up for the shift at a later date. In addition to the suffering of office workers, students also felt the impact of the power restriction in the first place. After the University of Science and Technology in Hunan issued a notice of power outage on the 28th, some students posted on Weibo that the whole class lit candles to study, saying it was a “rare occasion”.
Merchants, including Taobao and Jingdong, took advantage of the cold wave to launch energy storage generators and various solar products, as it only takes 5 to 13 hours to charge a full charge, the price is about 1,000 yuan, some merchants said they have recently sold more than 200 units.
Since the beginning of winter this year, China’s demand for electricity has increased dramatically. 11% year-on-year increase in electricity consumption in December, the electricity load even exceeded the summer peak, which is rare in history. In order to ensure that people can stay warm through the winter, the National Development and Reform Commission has put pressure on local governments and enterprises to require that this wave of power restrictions not let people suffer from the cold and must adhere to the bottom line of people’s livelihood.
The screen on the tram also restricts electricity.
