U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) said Monday (Dec. 28) that making public the results of congressional investigations into Hunter Biden’s overseas business dealings would reduce the risk of blackmail by foreign powers, which in turn would help protect national security.
In an interview with “Just The News,” Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Johnson said making public the findings of the investigation, including that Hunter Biden used his father’s name to make money and conduct lucrative business transactions around the world, would help reduce the risk of a “counterintelligence, extortion threat” that would have persisted in the absence of the investigation.
The Senate Homeland Security Committee and Finance Committee jointly released a report on the investigation of Hunter on Sept. 23. Johnson said the risk that information about “the Biden family’s foreign involvement” could be used by foreign powers to influence U.S. policy and thereby undermine national security could be mitigated by public exposure of the findings.
The investigative report found that Hunter Biden’s work for the Ukrainian energy company Burisma (as a director of the company) while his father was in charge of U.S. policy toward Ukraine (Biden was vice president of the United States) appeared to present a conflict of interest that “would be highly embarrassing for all U.S. officials pursuing an anti-corruption agenda in Ukraine.
The report also said that Hunter Biden, his family and Hunter Biden’s former business partner, Devon Archer, “received millions of dollars from foreigners with questionable backgrounds. The report also found that Hunter Biden made “suspicious transactions” worth millions of dollars with Chinese nationals who had ties to the Chinese regime and the Communist Party’s military.
Joe Biden has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, saying he never discussed overseas business matters with his son. Biden said in October that there was “no basis” for the allegation that Hunt profited from arranging outside contacts with him while he was vice president.
After the report was released, Andrew Bates, a spokesman for Joe Biden’s campaign, said the Senate report was using taxpayer money to launch “an attack based on what has long been proven to be a hard-core right-wing conspiracy theory.
In an October interview with the Epoch Times’ “American Thought Leader,” Johnson charged that Joe Biden was lying when he said he was unaware of his son’s foreign business dealings. He cited allegations by Tony Bobulinski, a former business partner of Hunter Biden. Bobulinski said he had met with Joe Biden to discuss business partnerships in China in particular.
Johnson said, “Once again, it proves that (former) Vice President Biden lied to the American public when he said he never talked to Hunter Biden about Hunter’s overseas business dealings, which of course was an attempt to keep everyone from finding a trail.” Johnson said.
In a 2019 interview with ABC News, Hunter Biden denied that he did anything wrong or illegal, or that his father was involved in his foreign business dealings. He acknowledged, however, that the Biden family name created business opportunities and that he did not consider the potential impact of his business dealings on his father’s political career.
“Did I make a mistake? Maybe in the grand scheme of things.” Hunter told ABC, “But did I make a mistake based on some kind of ethical lapse? Absolutely not.”
At the time, Hunter-Biden also said he would not serve on any boards or work with any foreign entities if Joe Biden were elected president.
Joe Biden said at the time that if elected, no one in his family would have “any business relationship with any foreign company or foreign-related person.
