At least 1,743,187 people worldwide have died from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and at least 79,313,380 cases have been confirmed as of 11:00 GMT on the 25th, according to official data compiled by AFP.
The outbreak began in China last December and so far at least 50,154,100 people worldwide are thought to have recovered.
AFP gathered data from national authorities and the World health Organization (WHO) to compile the statistics, but it is feared that this is only a fraction of the actual total number of infections, as many countries only detect cases with symptoms or the most severe symptoms.
On the 24th, the world reported 12,667 new deaths and 692,731 confirmed cases. According to the data, the countries with the highest number of new deaths were the United States (3,299 deaths), Mexico (861 deaths) and Brazil (762 deaths), in that order.
The United States remains the country with the most severe epidemic, with a cumulative total of 329,106 deaths and 18,650,5012 confirmed cases.
Other countries with severe outbreaks include Brazil (189,982 deaths and 7,423,945 confirmed cases), India (147,092 deaths and 10,146,845 confirmed cases), Mexico (121,172 deaths and 1,362,564 confirmed cases), and Italy (70,900 deaths and 2,093,317 confirmed cases).
According to the ratio of deaths to population, Belgium has the highest mortality rate, with 164 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Slovenia (119), Bosnia and Herzegovina (118), Italy (117), and Northern Macedonia (114).
From a regional point of view, Europe had a total of 540,647 deaths and 25 million 154 confirmed cases; Latin America and the Caribbean had a total of 493,837 deaths and 15.02 million 4469 confirmed cases; the United States and Canada had a total of 343,798 deaths and 19.18 million 8172 confirmed cases.
In Asia, there were 214,302 deaths and 13,617,000 confirmed cases; in the Middle East, there were 88,246 deaths and 3,850,039 confirmed cases; in Africa, there were 61,413 deaths and 2,599,658 confirmed cases; and in Oceania, there were 944 deaths and 30,885 confirmed cases.
