The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning to the U.S. business community, urging them to be careful when using communications equipment and services from China-linked companies because the actions could compromise data security, U.S. news site Axios reported.
According to Hong Kong’s Hong Kong Economic Journal, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Wolfe issued a security warning to Chinese companies on 22 May, reminding U.S. companies that using data services and equipment from companies with ties to China could pose a cybersecurity risk and that enhanced information security measures should be taken to reduce the storage of data in China.
Wolf said Chinese companies have long threatened U.S. cyber and data security by collecting U.S. data, posing risks to U.S. companies and customers such as theft of trade secrets, intellectual property and confidential business information, and using data to provide mainland Chinese companies with an unfair competitive advantage in the global marketplace.
Wolfe added that Chinese law requires businesses and individuals to comply with government requests to submit data and assist law enforcement and national security authorities, warning that allowing Chinese Communist Party officials unauthorized access to personal and proprietary sensitive data puts the U.S. economy and businesses at risk of exploitation. He urged U.S. businesses that they should carefully consider the risks of working with companies with ties to China.
