For patients with essential hypertension, long-term adherence to the regular use of antihypertensive drugs is the most reliable way to control blood pressure. However, during the treatment process, many patients with hypertension have doubts about whether long-term use of the same antihypertensive drug will lead to drug resistance. Why take the same drug, the same dose, but not as effective as before?
Hua Zi replied that the first thing is for sure, there is no obvious resistance to the antihypertensive drugs, if the long-term persistence of the same antihypertensive drugs, but the blood pressure control is worse and worse, it is likely that other reasons.
I. The resistance of antihypertensive drugs can be neglected
Most people learn this concept about drug resistance from sedatives, hypnotics, antibiotics and other drugs. Specifically, with the extension of the duration of medication, the effect of the drug will decline, or even lose efficacy. Sedative hypnotic drug resistance, because the central nervous to drug stimulation sensitivity is low; Antibiotic resistance occurs because pathogens mutate.
Now commonly used antihypertensive drugs, not on the central nervous, but directly on the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other peripheral tissues and organs, and human tissues and organs will not be mutated, so from the perspective of drug action mechanism, antihypertensive drugs will not produce obvious drug resistance. Resistance, if any, is so weak that it is negligible in long-term antihypertensive therapy.
Ii. Six reasons for the failure of antihypertensive drugs
- Unhealthy lifestyle: Unhealthy lifestyle is a common cause of failure of antihypertensive drugs. Many people think that after taking blood pressure drugs, they will be all right, so they indulge themselves by eating a diet high in salt, fat and sugar, and not getting enough exercise. These unhealthy lifestyle, will antagonize the role of antihypertensive drugs.
For patients with hypertension, life intervention is as important as drug therapy. For people with mild hypertension, it is possible to control their blood pressure without even taking medication by improving their healthy lifestyle. And a bad lifestyle will only make your blood pressure worse.
- Nervous and anxious emotions: For women and younger patients with hypertension, the reason for the failure of antihypertensive drugs is mostly long-term nervous and anxious emotions. Especially the character is more sensitive person, when meeting the pressure that comes from the place such as the job, family, can fall into the mood of nervous anxiety, make sympathetic nerve tone heighten, cause blood pressure to rise.
- Sleep disorders: Lack of sleep may cause increased blood pressure. Sleep disorders include difficulty falling asleep, early awakening, excessive dreaming, light sleep and other conditions. Some people suffer from sleep apnea syndrome, especially the fatter people, in fatigue, drinking and other conditions, will be “snoring”, seemingly sound sleep, but in fact breathing is limited, causing oxygen deprivation in the body, and finally lead to increased blood pressure, drug effect becomes worse.
- Seasonal changes: Human blood pressure is lower in summer and higher in winter. Especially in the northern part of China, the temperature difference between winter and summer is large, and the fluctuation of blood pressure with the seasons is more obvious. Such patients with hypertension need to adjust the antihypertensive drugs with the change of seasons.
- Disease Progression: Hypertension is a disease that progresses with age, so with age, blood pressure will increase year by year. Still have a few hypertensive patient, what blood pressure controls is bad, or it is the other chronic disease such as amalgamative diabetes, tall blood fat, caused renal artery to stricture, caused secondary hypertension.
- Reasons for drugs: Improper storage of antihypertensive drugs, or exposure to heat or moisture, will make drugs ineffective. Some old people like to buy a large number of drugs at one time, as a result, the storage time is too long leading to failure. There are drugs of the same specification, but different manufacturers have been changed, and the difference in the process and auxiliary materials may also lead to the difference in the efficacy of the drugs, leading to the rise in blood pressure.
- Communicate with your doctor when taking medicine
Most people with high blood pressure feel that their medication is becoming less effective when they take medication, which is probably the result of one or more of the above factors. You can find reasons for your own analysis and correct them. If you can’t figure out why, ask your doctor for help.
Don’t consider your blood pressure medication to be ineffective, just take more or replace it with another medication. Each antihypertensive drug has its own indications and contraindications, the adjustment of drugs, need to be carried out under the guidance of the doctor.
To sum up, antihypertensive drugs do not develop significant drug resistance. If the drug becomes less and less effective during the process of antihypertensive drugs, it is likely to be caused by other reasons. Pay more attention to your blood pressure and communicate more with your doctor if you have problems, so as to ensure the effect of antihypertensive treatment.
