President Trump visited the disaster area

U.S. President Donald Trump is visiting parts of the southern United States to see the damage, while mobilizing federal resources to help the region recover from hurricane damage.

President Trump boarded Air Force One from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Saturday to inspect the damage along parts of the Gulf coast of Louisiana and Texas hit by Hurricane Laura.

President Trump began his visit in the hard-hit city of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Louisiana’s department of Health says more than 220,000 people are without water supplies and many areas are without power. Lake Charles mayor Nic Hunter said the local water treatment plant had been badly hit and did not know when power would be restored.

President Trump will also visit Orange, a city in neighboring Texas. Texas Governor Greg Abbot said the city survived the worst of the hurricane’s forecast because it veered slightly off course.

A day earlier, President Trump declared Louisiana a major disaster area, authorizing the mobilization of federal resources to provide relief to the five worst-hit areas.
