Poll: 22% of Brazilians say no to Chinese vaccine

Brazil’s president, Jorge Posonalo, is sceptical about vaccines for COVID-19, and a poll published today shows that local reluctance to be vaccinated rose from 9 per cent in August to 22 per cent this week.

And most respondents said they were reluctant to accept the Chinese vaccine.

A poll by Datafolha, a pollster, found that 73% said they planned to get vaccinated, while 5% said they did not know. This compares with 89 per cent and 3 per cent respectively for the survey conducted in August.

Late last month, President Jair Bolsonaro announced that he would not vaccinate against any COVID-19 vaccine that came on the market. One of the world’s most prominent coronavirus sceptics has said it is his “right” to refuse the vaccine, and has specifically expressed doubts about the CoronaVac vaccine being developed by Sinovac Biotech, a Chinese company, and made by Instituto Butantan, of Sao Paulo’s state health department.

According to the Datafolha poll, only 47 per cent of respondents would like to be vaccinated against china-made vaccines, 50 per cent would not and 3 per cent were undecided.
