Li Ka-shing gives Nobel Prize winning team 2 members $380,000 each

The Li Ka Shing Foundation today (11) announced on social media platforms that Professor Michael Houghton, a recent Nobel Laureate in Medicine, has presented US$380,000 (equivalent to about HK$2.94 million) to two other scientists from his hepatitis C research team, namely Chinese virologists Zhu Guilin and Guo Jinhong, from Singapore and Taiwan, as a token of support for the Nobel Prize. The two Nobel laureates presented US$380,000 (HK$2.94 million) equivalent to the Nobel Prize as a token of support. In addition, two Nobel laureates presented Lee with replica Nobel medals as a token of their appreciation.

The Foundation introduced that on October 19 this year, Li Ka-shing saw an article in Nature Science titled “Discovering the unsung heroes behind the Nobel Prize winner in hepatitis C”, which mentioned that there were two other Chinese virologists working quietly in the team of scientists led by Professor Michael Houghton, but they were not awarded the Nobel Prize.

Michael Houghton, who led the research, was actually a bit disappointed when he accepted the Nobel Prize, as he could not change the long-standing rule of limiting Nobel Prize winners to three, but he listed the names of other scientists who had made contributions, “These talented people deserve to be recognized. In recognition of Houghton’s dedication to research and his efforts to let the world know and recognize the contributions of his colleagues on the team, Li Ka-shing praised his selflessness as one of the most valuable, and therefore donated the same amount of money to support his team members. Li Ka-shing believes that leadership can no longer be self-centered, which is the greatest limitation to achieving great things.
