False Claims of Account Hacking Chinese Communist Embassy in U.S. Says It Did Not Retweet Trump’s Criticism of Election

The Chinese Communist Party’s embassy in the United States tweeted late Wednesday night (Dec. 9, 2020) that its Twitter account had been hacked. The account previously retweeted a tweet from U.S. President Donald Trump complaining about the results of this year’s presidential election and raised eyebrows.

A top tweet on the Twitter account page of the Chinese Embassy in the United States said, “This afternoon, the Chinese Embassy’s Twitter account was hacked, and we condemn this act. It should be noted that the embassy did not retweet anything on the day of Dec. 9.”

President Trump has tweeted nearly every day since Presidential Election Day on Nov. 3, accusing the election of fraud and falsification, resulting in what appears to be a failure to get the votes he needs to win the election in some key states. He tweeted again Wednesday afternoon, “If there was fraud in the election, and the Democrats did, then why couldn’t the election results be overturned immediately? How can a country be governed this way?”

Two minutes later, the Chinese Communist Embassy in the U.S. retweeted Trump’s tweet, and it sparked concern and association among many Twitter users. A Reuters reporter saw and retweeted the retweet from the CCP Embassy, adding, “It’s an interesting retweet.

The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. later deleted the retweet of Trump’s tweet and claimed that the embassy’s Twitter account had been hacked, but did not say whether any other content besides the retweet had been hacked.

Previously, Communist Party officials said the Communist Party had no intention of interfering in the U.S. election and avoided commenting directly on the controversial U.S. election in a public forum.

William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC), named countries such as the CCP and Russia in August, saying these countries would continue to use covert and overt means to try to influence the preferences and views of American voters, increase discord within the United States and erode the American people’s confidence in the democratic process. A month later, U.S. presidential national security adviser John O’Brien said that compared to other countries, the Chinese Communist Party has the largest program to influence U.S. politics.
