Philippine media reported Tuesday (8) that researchers from the Department of Science and Technology and the Nuclear Research Institute have found high levels of radiation in western waters, but the cause is unknown.
The Philippines reported the incident to the ASEAN Atomic Energy Regulatory Agency last week and continues to investigate.
The director of the Nuclear Research Institute, Carlo Arcilla, said that iodine 129, a radioactive substance, was found in corals in the western waters at levels higher than those in the eastern waters of the Philippines. He explained that iodine 129 is usually released by nuclear reactors or power plants, and that the preliminary investigation is still in the preliminary stages, with no confirmed cause.
Under the EU’s Nuclear Safety Cooperation Programme, the Philippines will acquire 10 monitoring stations to measure environmental radiation dose rates and train personnel to operate the devices, most of which will be located in the western Philippine waters.
