The Ministry of Unification of the Republic of Korea (ROK) said on August 8 that the government has reached a consensus on the issue of providing the Sinocon vaccine to the DPRK, although it has not specifically discussed it with the health ministry.
The Ministry of Unification official said that the inter-Korean health cooperation is necessary for North Korean residents and even South Korean citizens, and that there is a certain consensus within the government. The official said that there are no borders for infectious diseases such as the spread of the new coronavirus, and that it is necessary for the DPRK to work together to deal with the epidemic.
Minister of Unification Lee In-young said that he will try to open a new phase of inter-Korean exchange by conducting small-scale trade with the North without violating the sanctions imposed by the international community on the North. The official said that a number of trading companies are negotiating with the DPRK, and although the DPRK’s lockdown imposed restrictions on the transit of goods, the government will try to lead the situation to a greater degree by resuming trade and dialogue with the DPRK from a small scale.
