Li Wangyang’s brother-in-law suffers from terminal cancer, hopes to see democratic China before he passes away

The cause of death of the late Hunan labor leader Li Wangyang, who died more than nine years ago, is still the subject of much debate. For years, his sister Li Wangling and brother-in-law Zhao Baozhu have been closely monitored by the authorities. Recently, Zhao Baozhu was confirmed to be suffering from advanced cancer, and is having trouble raising money for medical expenses. In an interview with the station, he revealed that although he knows his days are numbered, he still has unfulfilled wishes.

Li Wangyang’s sister Li Wanling and her husband Zhao Baozhu have always been close to each other, but on the ninth anniversary of Li Wangyang’s death last month, Li Wanling went to the mausoleum to pay tribute to her brother, but Zhao Baozhu did not accompany her, after the news of his serious illness.

The sixty-two-year-old Zhao Baozhu confirmed to the station by phone on Monday (12) that he is suffering from advanced cancer and is currently undergoing treatment at a cancer hospital in Shaoyang.

Zhao Baozhu: “Now it is the advanced stage of cancer. Rectal cancer. One day hanging water, injection and medicine. Now it is according to the conservative treatment method. The cure is definitely not good, but only to reduce the pain, now all day and night is in bed, eat food also can not. I know my own physique is a little worse.”

Three months ago, Zhao Baozhu found out that he had cancer and that it had spread to his liver. He went to Changsha in mid-May to undergo surgery to remove rectal cancer. He revealed that he still has a wish to be fulfilled.

Zhao Baozhu: “I hope I can see the arrival of a democratic China before I die. A free China, a democratic China. I don’t seem to be able to do that in my present state.”

Astronomical figures medical expenses become a major burden for the family

Originally, Zhao Baozhu also needed to undergo a liver resection, but due to financial reasons, it is still unknown whether the surgery can be completed. Li Wangling said in an online message that the astronomical treatment costs are like a titanic mountain for a family that has long suffered from suppressive monitoring and is not rich.

Chen Yuhua, a Hunan rights activist familiar with the Li family, said Zhao Baozhu is now relying on faith to carry on.

Chen Yuhua: “You can say that now is basically a countdown to life. The main thing is that Li Wangling is taking care of him. Now it is like this, the will is clear, the mind is very clear, but just every day is very heavy pain, to rely on drugs to relieve his pain, can only eat liquid food. His mental condition is very good, and his will is very strong. He is now a believer and still wants to fight the system with his life. He has only a little regret: his life is counting down, and it’s a pity that he won’t see that day.”

Li Wangyang, a leader of the Shaoyang labor movement in the 1980s, was sentenced by the authorities for counterrevolutionary crimes after June 4 and imprisoned twice for more than two decades. he died in hospital shortly after his release from prison in 2012 in a bizarre manner. Since then, Li Wangling and Zhao Baozhu have been under close surveillance by the authorities.

Chen Yuhua condemned the authorities for their unrelenting crackdown on Zhao Baozhu, whose life is in danger.

Chen Yuhua: “I know they must have set up secret sentry posts. Sometimes our phone calls are always intermittent and interrupted by them. That surgery in Changsha cost more than 100,000. Now the hospitalization cost is certainly not low. Our civic circle has done some charity activities and donated some to him, but it is not enough. When we donated there was a local group that loaded more than 10,000 dollars for him. Shaoyang authorities have sealed the money, and he can’t get it even if he wants to use it.”
