President Trump says he and his wife, Melania, have both tested positive for the neoconavirus.
Trump tweeted at about 1 a.m. Friday morning (Oct. 2, 2020), “Tonight, Melaniahi and I tested positive and began the quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this together.”
In the half-hour since, S&P 500 futures on the U.S. stock market have quickly slid nearly 2 percent.
In a letter to a White House spokesman, the president’s health care provider, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Conley, said the president and first lady have authorized him to release their test results. He said the President and First Lady are in good health and will remain at home at the White House while they recover. Lt. Col. Conley said he expects the president to continue to perform his duties during his recovery and will keep him informed of future developments.
Earlier that evening, Trump tweeted that one of his close aides, Hope Hicks, had tested positive for the neoconavirus, and he and his wife immediately began a self-quarantine.
He tweeted, “Hope Hicks has been working so hard that she hasn’t had a moment’s rest, but she has tested positive for the new coronavirus. Too bad. The First Lady and I are waiting for test results. In the meantime, we will begin the quarantine process.”
White House staff close to the President are regularly and frequently tested for the new coronavirus. However, the president himself and his aides are often seen without masks, and have been criticized for it. President Trump was asked during Tuesday’s first general election debate with Democratic candidate Biden why he wasn’t wearing a mask. He immediately took a mask out of his suit pocket. He said he would wear it when needed.
Cumulatively, 7.213 million people in the U.S. have been infected with the new coronavirus and more than 206,000 have died, according to data released at noon Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Trump has insisted that China must be responsible for the global spread of the neo-coronavirus, but his election opponent Biden has accused Trump of a poor response that has led to the epidemic.
