President Trump confirmed Thursday night (October 1, 2020) that one of his close aides, Hope Hicks, had tested positive for the new coronavirus, and he and the first lady immediately began a self-quarantine.
Earlier, the U.S. media reported that Hicks had tested positive, prompting speculation that the president himself may have been infected with the new coronavirus.
As a senior adviser to the president, Hicks has often been in close contact with him, including traveling with President Trump to Ohio on Tuesday for his first election debate with Democratic candidate Biden and appearing at a campaign event in Minnesota on Wednesday.
Trump tweeted Thursday night, “Hope Hicks has been working so hard that she hasn’t even had a moment’s rest, but she tested positive for neocoronavirus. Too bad. The First Lady and I are waiting for test results. In the meantime, we will begin quarantine procedures.”
Data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at noon Thursday showed that a total of 7,213,000 people have been infected with the new coronavirus and more than 206,000 have died across the United States.
Trump has insisted that China must be responsible for the global spread of the new coronavirus, but his election opponent Biden has blamed Trump’s poor response for the epidemic’s severity.
