Recently, a video has been circulating on the Internet, which shows that Zhang Tao, secretary of the party committee and chairman of the board of China Aerospace Investment Holding Corporation, beat up two other academicians for nearly 30 minutes nearly a month ago because he was unsuccessful in seeking to be nominated as a member of the International Academy of Astronautics, causing the two to be hospitalized so far. After the scandal caused a stir, China Aerospace Science and Technology Group decided to suspend Zhang Tao on July 4 to cooperate with the investigation, according to the latest news.
According to China News Weekly, documents obtained by the weekly from an insider in China’s aerospace sector show that on the afternoon of June 6, Zhang Tao invited 85-year-old academician Wu Meirong to visit the company, and Wu invited 55-year-old academician Wang Jinnian to attend in order to get to know Zhang Tao better.
That evening, Zhang Tao invited the two to dinner, during the meeting proposed to apply for membership of the International Academy of Astronautics this year, hoping that the two academicians Wu Wang support. Wang Jinnian because of the first meeting with Zhang Tao, said it is not clear what each other’s work, should understand clearly before. Zhang Tao’s response made him angry and he even got up and tried to beat Wang Jinnian. Wu Meirong was very frightened and asked to leave the meeting.
According to the CCTV footage, at around 10:30pm that night, Zhang Tao and his subordinates sent the two academicians back to Wang Jinnian’s residence. Before Wang Jinnian took the elevator, Zhang Tao suddenly kicked Wang Jinnian to the ground from behind and beat him. He then also pushed Wu Meirong to the ground. Zhang Tao had also rushed into the elevator, moved against Wang Jinnian and Wu Meirong who had already entered the elevator, and dragged Wang Jinnian out of the elevator to continue the beating. The beating lasted for about 30 minutes.
The report said that Wang Jinnian and Wu Meirong are still hospitalized. Wang Jinnian suffered multiple rib fractures and multiple soft tissue injuries throughout his body. Wu Meiyong suffered a slipped lumbar spine and a mild compression fracture of the thoracic spine. A secretary to the chairman of Aisino Investment Holdings Co., Ltd. said that the police station had intervened in the investigation after the incident, but the results were not yet available, and Zhang Tao was still working normally.
Wu Meirong, 85, who was beaten and hospitalized, was awarded the Von Kamen Prize by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) in 2014, the report said. Wang Jinnian was inducted as an IAA Fellow in 2016 and elected as a member of the IAA Bureau in 2017.
China Aviation Investment Party Group issued an internal notice on July 2, saying that the group attaches great importance to the incident and is fully understanding the truth.
