Chinese maritime police ships again into the waters of the Diaoyu Islands, Japan’s proposal “self-defense type” to use force

Japan Coast Guard Headquarters said on 29th that 4 vessels of the Chinese Communist Party’s Coast Guard Bureau sailed into Japanese territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands (known as Diaoyu Islands in China) and sailed for about 8 hours. This is the 25th since the Chinese official ships again sailed into the territorial waters, the 20th day this year. In an effort to restrain the Chinese vessels, the Japan Restoration Council and the National Democratic Party submitted to the Diet an amendment to the Self-Defense Forces Act that would allow members to use weapons without exceeding the scope of self-defense.

Kyodo News reported that two vessels of the Chinese Communist Party’s Coast Guard Bureau sailed into Japanese territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands from around 2:55 a.m. and another two vessels from around 8:40 a.m. One by one. The first two made an attempt to approach three Japanese fishing boats operating in the sea about 25 kilometers southeast of Minamijima, and four Chinese boats left the territorial waters as if they were chasing the boats from around 10:45 a.m. One Chinese boat was equipped with equipment similar to a machine gun.

NHK reported that for the first time, the Japan Restoration Council and the National Democratic Party jointly proposed to counteract the entry of Chinese ships into the territorial waters. In the amendment to the Self-Defense Forces Law, it is clearly stipulated that the Self-Defense Forces shall assume the vigilance surveillance and information gathering activities of the vessels of the Chinese Coast Guard Bureau. In the event of a threat to the life of a member of the force during the operation of the alert and surveillance activities, the member will be allowed to use weapons without exceeding the scope of self-defense.

The Constitutional Democratic Party, the opposition party with the largest number of seats in the House of Representatives, is also proposing to submit a bill to the Diet to strengthen the Maritime Security Agency.
