Pressuring Pelosi, Hundreds of U.S. House Members Sign Joint Letter

From Washington, D.C., 209 Republican members of the House of Representatives have signed an open letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), spurred by House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (D-Calif.), asking her to direct the chairs of relevant Democratic committees to join a bipartisan congressional investigation into the origins of the new coronavirus.

In a press release, Scalise wrote, “Nearly 18 months have passed since the emergence of New Coronavirus in Wuhan, China, and House Democrats have not held a single hearing on the origin of New Coronavirus, despite repeated requests from House Republicans that Congress devote investigative resources to examining claims that the pandemic began in a Chinese laboratory and that the Chinese Communist Party covered it up. ” In this open letter to Pelosi, House Republicans say, “These questions about the Chinese Communist Party’s responsibility are not a diversion, as you falsely claim. Rather, every American family who has lost a loved one deserves answers about the source of this terrible virus, and it is an insult to them that House Democrats have consistently refused to allocate investigative resources to get those answers.”

The Wall Street Journal 23 cited a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report that said three researchers from China’s Wuhan Institute of Virus Research sought treatment at the hospital in November 2019. The report fueled growing calls in U.S. political circles and public opinion for a more comprehensive investigation into the source of the new coronavirus. In light of the pressure from Congress and public opinion, President Biden announced through a statement on the 26th that he has asked the U.S. intelligence community to redouble its efforts to collect and analyze information that might bring closer to a definitive conclusion on the source of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and to report back to him within 90 days.

According to Scalise, “Despite this new evidence, House Democrats remain indifferent to the CCP’s role in the pandemic. It is also clear that because of the CCP’s ability to influence the World Health Organization’s (WHO) review process over the past year, the United States cannot rely on the agency to conduct a thorough investigation.” The 209 Republican House members who participated in the cosponsorship told Pelosi, “It is clear that the WHO has failed to provide a final opinion on the origin of the new coronavirus and the responsibility of the Chinese Communist Party. That task falls to us in Congress. House Republicans have been calling on you to uncover this truth. Now is the time for you to join the fight.”

The letter states, “We hope House Democrats will abandon their partisan agenda and join House Republicans in their investigation into the origins of the New Coronavirus. This is one of the most important issues we face. Thank you for your attention to this urgent request.” In addition, Republicans on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees also launched an investigation Friday into a grant awarded to the EcoHealth Alliance by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Fox News reported. The lawmakers launching the investigation believe the coalition awarded U.S. taxpayer funds to the Wuhan Institute of Virus Research to study the risk that bat coronavirus could infect humans.
