The World Health Assembly (WHA) online meeting was held on Monday (May 24), and Taiwan expressed its stern protest and dissatisfaction with the Chinese Communist authorities’ continued suppression and obstruction of its participation in the WHA.
In a statement, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said that Taiwan has never belonged to China for one day and has never accepted its one-sided “One China Principle”, “The Chinese Communist Party has misquoted the General Assembly and WHO resolutions to dwarf Taiwan and mislead the international community, which has caused harm to the health rights of the people of Taiwan. Its irresponsible behavior will not help the development of cross-strait relations.”
The RCC stressed that at a time when the global focus is on addressing the epidemic and the international community widely supports Taiwan’s participation, Beijing has not stopped its unreasonable suppression of Taiwan’s participation in the WHO, but has instead dwarfed Taiwan in the so-called “central” to “local” manner, swindling that It is completely ignorant of the facts that “proper arrangements have been made for Taiwan’s participation in global health affairs”.
The G7 foreign ministers met in London in early May and issued a joint communiqué after the meeting, in which they expressed their “support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization forum and the World Health Assembly” and their strong opposition to any unilateral action that could exacerbate tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The Council expressed its gratitude for the international community’s support for Taiwan and called on the World Health Organization and others not to give in to the political claims of particular members and ignore the fact that the people of Taiwan enjoy the same human right to health as all other countries, thus leaving a gap in global epidemic prevention.
“We are also telling the Chinese Communist authorities that the essence of the development of cross-strait relations is mutual respect and goodwill and understanding, not imposing a ‘political framework’ set by one party on the other and overriding the ‘human right to health’. In the future, my government will continue to contribute public health expertise, actively seek international cooperation, and work together to address the challenges of the epidemic.” The Land Commission said in a statement.
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-sup and Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung also expressed their stern dissatisfaction that Taiwan was not invited to attend the 74th World Health Assembly online session.
According to a press release issued by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, Wu Chiu-sup regretted the WHO secretariat’s continued disregard for the health and human rights of 23.5 million Taiwanese people. He also said that the WHO has ignored the international community’s righteous call for Taiwan to contribute to global public health care, which not only violates the noble goal of the United Nations system, including the WHO, to “leave no one behind,” but also prevents countries around the world from benefiting from Taiwan’s rich public health experience, and Taiwan expresses its strong dissatisfaction with this.
Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shizhong stressed that Taiwan’s failure to participate in the WHO is not only a loss for Taiwan, but also for the world. He added: “Health is a basic human right and a universal value, and the WHO, as a professional international medical and health organization, should serve the health and well-being of all mankind and should not be subordinated to the political interests of specific members.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday, “In order to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to safeguard the seriousness and authority of the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and WHO, China cannot agree to Taiwan’s participation in this year’s WHO conference.” He added that China’s decision has received wide support and understanding from the international community.
He also accused the DPP authorities of “seeking independence by epidemic” as the real purpose of their hype on the WHO issue, which China firmly opposes. He said: “The facts have repeatedly proved that the one-China principle is a major trend in the international community, and the DPP authorities will never succeed in their attempts. We advise the DPP authorities to stop making use of the epidemic to engage in political maneuvering and stop making a fool of themselves.”
Taiwan’s epidemic seems to be on the rise recently, with 460 new confirmed cases of new coronary in Taiwan in the past 24 hours, raising the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 4,917, according to data from the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center also said that it has recently discovered a number of suspected foreigners using the Internet to deliberately and maliciously post and disseminate “Taipei-New Taipei turned into a ghost town in a second,” “20,000 people have gone missing,” “two funeral The report was published on the Internet and was intended to interfere with the epidemic prevention work in Taiwan. The command center clarified that this is an inaccurate message and reminded the public not to forward and spread it again.
AFP reported that although the officials did not name names, they said that a large number of the false messages disseminated were written in simplified Chinese, which is used in mainland China, and not in traditional Chinese, which is used in Taiwan.
