India says it will return the captured Chinese soldier, but there is “no time frame” yet.

On Monday, the Indian government announced that the Indian military had arrested Chinese Army Corporal Wang Ya Long in the Ladakh region along the India-China border. The soldier was lost while searching for a Tibetan herder’s yak, said Colonel Zhang Zhizuhui, spokesman for the Chinese army’s Western War Zone.

In a statement, Zhang said, “We hope the Indian side will keep its promise and hand over the lost person to the Chinese side as soon as possible” to maintain peace in the border region.

An Indian government official told AFP on Tuesday (Oct. 20) that the soldier was “in good condition,” but that he could only be released after “completing the formalities. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that “no time frame has been set yet.

The AFP report noted that the Indian and Chinese soldiers are preparing for a long and harsh winter in the border region.
