High-profile praise for Hitler, CNN freelance writer fired

A CNN contributor has declared that it is severing ties with him because of his history of praising Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and his recent posting of false statements about Hitler.

Adeel Raja tweeted on Sunday, May 16, “The world needs a Hitler today.” Although he has since deleted the post, CNN still reacted.

A CNN spokesperson told the news outlet in a statement, “Raja is not a CNN employee, he is just a freelance writer for CNN. He has reported some news about Islamabad for CNN. However, in light of these abhorrent statements, he will no longer be working with CNN in any capacity.”

However, according to the Washington Examiner, the spokesman initially falsely claimed he had never heard of Raja as a person.

Raja has reportedly tweeted positively about Hitler, who carried out the Holocaust against the Jews, on several occasions. Back in 2014, Raja wrote, “My support for Germany is due to what Hitler did to the Jews!” He added, “Heil Hitler!”

On Monday, May 17, Raja tweeted in his defense, claiming that he lost his job because of other missives about the fighting between Israel and the Palestinians in the Middle East.

He also wrote, “Glad that (my) one tweet contributed to the Palestinian cause and put it in the spotlight. I lost my job, and the West lost its claim to freedom of expression and human rights!”

Since then, however, Raja has also revised his profile on LinkedIn. He said he ended that job in May after nearly eight years at CNN, adding that he was listed as an executive producer for ARY News.

By one count, Raja wrote or co-authored 54 articles for CNN. His most recent article was published in the fall of 2020.
