With less than a week left in the U.S. presidential election, the heat is on. However, it is rumored that the campaign account of US President Donald Trump, who is running for re-election, has been hacked and $2.3 million has been stolen. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now investigating the theft.
According to the Associated Press, Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Andrew Hitt said on September 29 that hackers broke into the Wisconsin Republican Party’s account and stole $2.3 million, which was used for campaigning in the swing state. The money would have been used as emergency spending depending on the election, as polls show that Biden and Trump have been in narrower margins in Wisconsin.
Hitt also noted that the hacker’s tactic appears to have been to alter invoices from Trump’s campaign gadget vendors, allowing the money to flow to the hacker’s account, not the campaign account, when supporters paid. He said that the hacking was discovered when someone noticed invoices that shouldn’t have been there.
Hitt revealed that they discovered the suspicious activity on Oct. 22 and contacted the FBI last Friday. A spokesman for the FBI, which is currently investigating the case, has yet to comment.
