WHA will hold a video conference on the 24th, and Taiwan has still not been invited. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is still too late by the evening of the 23rd.
This year’s World Health Assembly (WHA) will be held on May 24, and so far Taiwan has not received an invitation letter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China confirmed on the 13th that nearly 30 European countries and 1,084 members of parliament have sent a joint letter to WHO Secretary-General Tan Desai in support of Taiwan’s participation in the WHO Conference and related meetings, mechanisms and activities.
On May 12, the co-chairs of the European Formosa Club, led by members of the European Parliament and 1,084 members of parliament from nearly 30 European countries, sent a joint letter to WHO Secretary-General Tan Desai. They also informed EU Executive Committee President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
The co-signatories pointed out that since the outbreak of the Chinese Communist virus (COVID-19) has been raging around the world, Taiwan has shown outstanding results in preventing the epidemic and has reached out to other countries, donating 54 million medical masks and other epidemic prevention supplies to more than 80 countries worldwide so far. The exclusion of Taiwan from important discussions at the World Health Organization not only undermines the rights of all Taiwanese people, but also deprives Taiwan of the opportunity to share its contributions and the international community of the expertise and valuable experience gained as a result.
The co-signatories stressed that the global pandemic of the Chinese Communist virus means that no one can get away with avoiding it, and that Taiwan’s participation in the WHO is not a geopolitical race, but a health issue that should be free from political interference.
The MPs therefore called on Tandse to invite Taiwan to attend this year’s World Health Assembly as an observer and to fully include Taiwan in the meetings, mechanisms and activities of the WHO in the interests of all parties.
The co-signatories include Nicola Beer (German), Heidi Hautala (Finnish) and Fabio Massimo Castaldo (Italian), the three vice presidents of the European Parliament, Nathalie Delattre and Vincent Delahaye, the two vice presidents of the French Senate, and Annie Genie, the two vice presidents of the National Assembly. The two deputy speakers of the French Senate, Nathalie Delattre and Vincent Delahaye, the two deputy speakers of the National Assembly, Annie Genevard and David Habib, the two deputy speakers of the Slovak Parliament, Milan Laurencik and Gabor Grendel, the deputy speaker of the Danish Parliament, Pia Kjærsgaard, and the deputy speaker of the Icelandic Parliament, Björn Leví Gunnarsson, are among the most important members of the European Parliament. The signatures show a high degree of cross-party consensus in European parliaments.
In addition to MEPs, there were also MPs from the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia and Greece.
In response to the international support, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its high welcome and sincere gratitude on the 13th, and said it will continue to work with countries with similar ideas to further promote Taiwan’s participation in the WHO case, and once again called on the WHO to face up to the mainstream opinion of the international community and invite Taiwan to attend the WHO meeting as soon as possible, so as to jointly contribute to the health and well-being of people around the world.
Since the outbreak of the Chinese Communist Party’s viral epidemic, Tan and the WHO under his leadership have assisted the Chinese Communist Party in concealing the epidemic and shirking responsibility for the epidemic on the one hand, and excluded Taiwan, a top student in epidemic prevention, from participating in the WHA on the other, which has long triggered a huge public backlash and calls for his stepping down.
