Many restaurants in New Jersey have been struggling to survive the outbreak for months. Recently, one restaurant left a $1,000 tip after a meal from a regular customer, bringing tears to the eyes of the staff.
According to CNN, the restaurant, called The Starving Artist, is located in the New Jersey seaside town of Ocean Grove, and owner Arnold Teixeira (Arnold Teixeira) said the customer has been a regular since 2001.
“This customer and his family ate and left without saying anything,” Teixeira said. Teixejo said. “When the waitress saw the tip they had left on the paid receipt, she started crying. Another employee saw the tip figure and started crying, too. Then I saw it, too, and I couldn’t help but cry, too. It was so touching and it was a really tough time for us.”
When leaving a large tip, the customer also left a heartwarming note. The note read, “Thank you so much for trying to make it through this tough time.” “We appreciate your delicious food, warm smiles and great atmosphere …… Please know that we care about you very much. It wouldn’t be a great summer for us without your restaurant.”
The note ended with the customer wanting the $1,000 tip to be divided among the entire staff. The owner, Teixejo, gave the entire tip to his seven employees, not including himself.
The restaurant, which celebrated its 21st anniversary just a few days ago, is popular with locals and summer visitors alike.
Teixejo said he wasn’t even sure if he could stay open after the March outbreak forced him to close. “The situation kept getting worse. I had started preparing for the possibility that I might not be able to reopen again. We’re not at half of what we usually made in previous summers, but this time the tips left by customers have restored our hope for humanity and made us feel very good about what we’re giving. We took a lot of steps to protect our customers, and it can even be exhausting to do it later, but now we know our efforts weren’t in vain.”
