Senior Chinese government officials have broken their silence to publicly comment on the ongoing vote counting process in the U.S. presidential election.
Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng was asked about China’s views on the U.S. presidential election at a press conference on Thursday (November 5, 2020). He said that the counting of votes is still underway and the election results are not yet clear, and China hopes that the U.S. election will proceed smoothly and smoothly. China hopes that the new U.S. administration and China will go in the same direction, uphold the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, manage differences and push forward the development of relations between the two countries, Le Yucheng added.
A day earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, when asked the same question at a press conference, said only quietly: “We note that the U.S. presidential election is underway and the results have not yet been determined.”
The U.S. administration under Trump has notably stepped up its criticism of China over the past few years, demanding that Beijing treat the U.S. in a truly reciprocal manner in a number of areas, including trade and people-to-people exchanges, but drawing resentment and pushback from Beijing.
During the campaign, Trump also repeatedly called Biden Beijing’s choice, saying the United States would be subservient to China under Biden’s leadership.
For his part, Biden criticized the Trump administration for acting alone in imposing tariffs and other measures on China that were not effective against China. He said that if elected, he would work with U.S. allies to take action against China on issues such as the economy and trade.
Sen. Menendez, the chief Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said last month that Biden, if elected as the next U.S. president, would adopt a “carrot and stick” policy in dealing with China.
