U.S. Air Force Sends B-52Hs to Cover Afghan Withdrawal

The U.S. Air Force confirmed that it has deployed two B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers to Qada, but their mission is not to launch an attack on the enemy, but to cover the orderly departure of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Defense Blog (Defense-Blog) reported that according to the U.S. Air Force News, the U.S. military is determined to withdraw from Afghanistan, however, the withdrawal process will have what appears to be a surge of troops, mainly to ensure order in Afghanistan. Four B-52s arrived in late April, and now 2 more have been added to the crippled fleet, bringing the total number to six.

The B-52H’s home base is Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, and it takes 15 hours to fly a trip to the Middle East. 2 B-52s arrived at Al Udeid AFB, Qatar, on May 4, 2021.

The original withdrawal date between the U.S. government and the Taliban was May 1, but Biden thought this was too tight, at least a few months, so the withdrawal continued until Sept. 11, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

After the withdrawal of U.S. troops, security in Afghanistan will be maintained entirely by the country’s government forces, but there has already been an escalation of violence, with almost daily deadly clashes, either in terrorist attacks or in fighting between the Taliban and regular forces.
