The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command will conduct the “Northern Edge 2021” (Northern Edge 2021) large-scale military exercise in Alaska from May 3 local time, 240 military aircraft, six naval vessels and 15,000 troops will participate in the exercise, which is also the largest military exercise planned in Alaska this year. It is also the largest military exercise scheduled to be held in Alaska this year.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet Command said through a press release that the purpose of the “Northern Edge 2021” is to conduct high-intensity combat training, to enhance the readiness of participating troops, and to develop tacit understanding and enhance cooperation experience among the troops in joint exercises. Air Force Lt. Col. Mike Boyer, who is in charge of planning the exercise, pointed out that the U.S. military needs to bring multiple different units together in one large field in order to train with each other. Boyer emphasized, “Usually each unit operates independently, but that doesn’t really capture the complexity of the force formations faced in modern conflicts, so Northern Edge allows the younger soldiers in the participating units to gain the experience to effectively face the complexities that may arise in future conflicts.”
The units participating in Northern Edge 2021 include the USS Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11), USS Makin Island “The exercise will involve 240 military aircraft, six Navy ships and 15,000 troops from May 3 and conclude on May 14 in the region around Alaska.
