A 12-year-old North Carolina boy took advantage of the pandemic lockdown to take extra classes, and now, a year later, he is preparing to graduate from both high school and college in the same week.

Mike Wimmer, of Salisbury, completed what would normally take four years to complete, including two years of high school and two years of college, and earned an associate’s degree in one year, CNN reported.

He will graduate from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College on May 21 and from Concord Academy High School on May 28, while being selected as the Most Outstanding Student to deliver the high school commencement address.

In fact, Wimmer did not initially plan to graduate at the same time. He was taking dual enrollment classes at the time, but he later realized that if he took just a few more classes he could get his associate’s degree before he graduated from high school, so he did.

Wilmer is particularly interested in robotics and says he’s “an avid math and science guy. He received his first iPad when he was 18 months old and wanted to know how it worked.

According to Wilmer’s personal website, Next Era Innovations, he taught himself about computer programming and robotics through trial and error and online movies.

He also founded an Internet startup called Reflect Social, which “combines popular social media platforms with Internet of Things (IoT) devices to provide a new dynamic social experience. Its goal is to simplify the way smart home technology works to help others.

Wimmer’s parents are also proud of their brilliant son, “If a door is locked, he will find another way to achieve his goals,” says Melissa Wimmer.

Although several years younger than his classmates, Wimmer says he gets along well with them. But he wants everyone to understand that he’s still a kid, and that he makes time to do normal kid activities like playing basketball or playing with Legos.

“A lot of people think I’ve given up or lost my childhood years,” Wimmer said, “but I tell them I’m having the best time of my life.”

With graduation only a few weeks away, Wimmer said he is considering many options for his next steps, including job opportunities from within and outside the United States, continuing his education and also having a few partnerships to help grow his startup.
