Fujian man crossed the Taiwan Strait in a rubber boat, saying he was “running for freedom”

A man surnamed Zhou, who claimed to have come from Fujian, crossed the Taiwan Strait alone in a rubber boat and finally arrived at the Taichung port pier. He claimed to have come to “join the freedom”, Taiwan police are investigating his identity and motives.

The man said he bought a rubber boat with 16,000 yuan and set off from the mainland’s Fujian port the morning before last (April 30) to cross the Taiwan Strait. He spent a total of about 16 hours and successfully arrived at the Taichung port pier at about 2 a.m. on May 1, unnoticed along the way.

After disembarking, the man surnamed Zhou asked the workers for help because he was not familiar with the neighborhood. The man said he had not eaten for a whole day, so the workers bought some food for him and brought some clothes for him to change. The workers later learned that the man had come from the mainland by boat and decided to call the police.

The man claimed that he had no criminal record on the mainland and that he only “yearned for the democratic freedom of Taiwan” and secretly went to Taiwan because he wanted to “join the freedom”, adding that he had no friends or relatives in Taiwan and had no plans to do anything when he arrived.

The police are now taking the man surnamed Zhou to quarantine and investigating his identity and motives.
