Wang Yi Proposes Diaoyutai Solution Japan Rejects Today

China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the two sides confronted each other over the Diaoyutai Islands, saying that the situation should improve if ships other than official vessels from both sides do not enter the surrounding waters. However, the Japanese side today explicitly rejected the proposal put forward by Wang Yi, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsushin Kato said that the Japanese government is totally unacceptable.

According to Kyodo News, Kato said that the relevant statement is based on China’s own position, which is totally unacceptable to the Japanese government.

Kato reiterated that “the Senkaku Islands are undoubtedly our inherent territory, both historically and in terms of international law,” and stressed that “the issue of territorial sovereignty surrounding the Senkaku Islands never existed in the first place. There is no problem for Japanese fishing vessels to carry out activities in accordance with our laws and regulations.

In an interview with the media in Tokyo yesterday, Wang Yi said that if both sides do not allow vessels other than official vessels to enter the surrounding waters, the problem will calm down and disappear. According to the foreign news agency, Kan expressed concern to Wang Yi about Chinese official vessels sailing in the waters around Diaoyutai Islands.
