Argentine soccer superstar Diego Maradona died Wednesday at the age of 60 and is scheduled to be buried Thursday in a Buenos Aires suburb.

Argentine media reported that the attacking player died of heart and lung problems. Maradona had battled alcohol and drug addiction for years.

In tiny Buenos Aires, in South Beach, Florida, many people mourned Maradona’s death, saying he meant a lot to Argentina.

Restaurant manager Maria said, “Yes, I’m shocked. I know he’s not doing well. He was in the hospital. He had some health problems. But I’m shocked because he was really an Argentine soccer icon, that’s what we called him,” said Pedestrian Maria.

Pedestrian Maria said, “I don’t like what he does to his children, he doesn’t want to acknowledge them. I don’t like his political views. But he’s a great player. That’s the only thing I care about, he represents Argentina in the world.

Soccer fan Millard said, “I’m sad because the best player ever, Diego Armando Maradona, passed away. To think that he brought us so much joy, after the World Cup and in today’s Argentina, we lost the best player ever.

He was, he really was, you know he was the king of the ball until 1986, and in that World Cup I think for a lot of people he became the god of the ball,” said Juan, an indoor soccer player.

Born in poverty, Maradona led Argentina to the World Cup in Mexico in 1986. He played 91 games for Argentina, scoring 34 times, and participated in four World Cup tournaments. He ended his professional soccer career in 1997.
