The MEPs also pointed the finger at European Commission officials for prioritizing business relations with China at the expense of human rights.
According to the newspaper, French left-wing MEP Emmanuel Maurel said in a statement that concrete action is needed to categorically demonstrate that the EU is principled, and that means the EU needs to reject the EU-China investment agreement. The newspaper said that most of the main parties in the parliament have officially announced that they will not support the EU-China investment agreement if the Chinese sanctions remain in place.
At the end of last year, EU and Chinese leaders announced in a video meeting a comprehensive investment agreement in principle, in which China will open up future investments by European companies in sectors such as aircraft manufacturing, cloud services, finance and healthcare. A month ago, Sino-European relations deteriorated over the Xinjiang human rights issue, with the EU announcing sanctions against four Chinese officials for allegedly violating the human rights of Uighurs in Xinjiang. China then countered by announcing sanctions against 10 members of the European Parliament and related institutions, among others.
According to the Central News Agency, the outside world is pessimistic about whether the two sides can implement the China-EU investment agreement after China and Europe imposed sanctions on each other.
