London fully transparent air pool designer: swimming like flying

The airborne fully transparent pool spans the adjacent 10-story apartment building.

Recently a property in London, England will open its new air pool, the pool is special because it is the world’s largest all-acrylic pool, 35 meters above the ground, across the top of two 10-story apartment buildings.

Acrylic (acrylic) for organic glass replacement products, with durability, light transmission and shaping beautiful features, can be used in aquariums, windows, etc..

The sky pool is fully transparent, looking up from the bottom of the pool, like a piece of transparent glass, shimmering in the sunlight. According to the pool engineer Brian Eckersley is: “When you swim looking down, like flying.”

In addition the engineers also designed five lighting effects for the pool.

The air pool is 25 meters long, 5 meters wide, span 14 meters, that is to say, 14 meters suspended in the air, its acrylic border width of 200 mm, although the depth of 3.2 meters, but for the safety of only 1.2 meters of water injection, the bottom is 300 mm thick. The pool does not contain water weighs 50 tons, after the injection of water, the total weight can reach 425 tons.

The pool was designed by the architectural firm Arup Associates and proposed by the engineering firm Eckersley O’Callaghan and the aquarium design firm Reynolds. Among them was the architectural firm Arup Associates, which had designed the famous Sydney Opera House.

Built by the Reynolds factory in Colorado, USA, the pool was tested for strength before arriving at Embassy Gardens in London, the pool’s final destination. For the installation, the pool was lifted to the installation location by a 750-ton mobile crane, along with a 50-ton crane to provide support.

“Lifting was a precise process, as the tolerance allowed for installing the pool into the steel frame was just 30cm.” said EcoWorld Ballymore, the developer of the building.

The pool is located in the Embassy Gardens development near Nine Elms in southwest London, near the south bank of the Thames and next to the U.S. Embassy, where the pool is positioned to enjoy views of London landmarks such as the London Eye and Westminster Abbey.

At that time, the design of the pool had conceived a number of options, the developer believes that the location of the top floor of the various apartments in the development is not enough to build a large pool, so the design of the pool across the building, and overturned the idea of the pool using a steel structure, instead using transparent materials designed to get the best landscape effect, so that swimmers can see the ground, the people below can see the sky.

The official opening of the sky pool will be on May 19, for the use of building residents only.
